Hidden History Johannesburg

Step into the story of Johannesburg with Timetraveller Adventures on a walk through the historic heart of old Jozi.

This guided journey takes you through Ferreirasdorp and Marshalltown, where the city of gold first began.

Along the way, we unpack the myths, legends, and real history that shaped Johannesburg into what it is today.

We descend into the old Ferreira’s Mine Tunnel, where the story of the three “Georges” unfolds — each with a claim to the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand. Who really found it first? The debate is still part of Jozi’s legend.

From there we move to Gandhi Square, a striking example of inner-city renewal, while exploring Mahatma Gandhi’s early years and his time in South Africa.

Along historic Main Street, we explore the open-air mining museum, including a remarkable stamp battery that spent 23 years buried in a mine dump before being rediscovered

. At the former Anglo American campus (now the Mahishiri Institute), we admire the architecture and uncover how early mining magnates — many originally from Kimberley — helped shape the city’s rapid rise.

We end our walk in the narrow streets of Ferreirastown, one of Johannesburg’s oldest districts, leading to the Randjieslaagte beacon, the very point where the original town was laid out in 1886.

Along the way, we dive into some of Jozi’s most curious stories:

The mystery of the three Georges and the gold discovery

The legend of the travelling circus Soda water and its unexpected link to the Vaal Dam

The lost location of Frenchfontein

How Pritchard Street became the city’s original shopping hub

And even… what a right-angled triangle has to do with Johannesburg 📍
